コロケーション(連語)とは?なぜ直訳だとズレるのか

英語には、単語単体ではなく「一緒によく使われる自然な組み合わせ(コロケーション:Collocation)」が存在します。

例えば、日本語では「強い雨」と言うので、英語でもそのまま strong rain と直訳したくなります。しかし、英語では一般的に heavy rain という組み合わせが好まれます。

単語の意味としては通じても、「ネイティブが普段選ぶ組み合わせとは少し違う」というズレを知ることが、自然で流暢な英語を身につけるための近道です。
