現代英語で変化した表現|より中立的・包括的な言い換え

はじめに

ここで紹介する「従来の表現」のすべてが誤りや禁止用語というわけではありません。現在でも日常会話や特定の文脈で使われている表現も多く含まれます。

現代英語では、性別や属性をわざわざ特定・限定する必要がない場合、より包括的・中立的な表現を選ぶことが一般的になっています。


表現の位置づけ・使い分けの目安(3つの基準)

  • 🟢 A:現代的な標準表現として推奨(現在の公的・ビジネス・一般的な文章で、より中立的な表現が広く推奨・採用されている)
  • 🟡 B:現在も普通・中立的な選択肢あり(従来の語も現役で使われるが、場面に応じて中立的な表現も選べる)
  • 🔵 C:文脈・本人の選好を優先(単純な一対一の置換を行わず、文脈・地域・本人のアイデンティティに合わせる)

「性別をわざわざ付けない」原則

female doctormale nurse のように、職業に性別を冠する表現は「その人の性別自体が話題になる文脈」以外では単に doctor, nurse, engineer と呼ぶのが自然です。

4. 身体・障害・健康

重要:人と設備の使い分け

  • 人について: handicapped は避け、person with a disability を用いるのが標準的です。
  • 設備・環境について: 従来の handicapped parking などの表現から、accessible parking / accessible facilities(利用しやすい・バリアフリー対応の)への置き換えが進んでいます。
  • blind / Deaf について: 単語自体が否定的なわけではなく、当事者のアイデンティティとして誇りを持って使われます(大文字の Deaf など)。

fat overweight / plus-size / [文脈による] 論争の多い語。fat-acceptance の立場では fat 自体を中立的記述語とみなし、overweight を医療化・スティグマ化した語として避ける動きもある。単純な同義置換ではなく文脈と本人の選好を考慮 🔵

5. 比喩的・俗語的な医学用語の流用

日常会話で性格や状況を形容する際、医学用語・精神疾患名を比喩として使うのを避ける動きが広がっています。

6. 人種・民族・属性

地域、歴史的経緯、本人のアイデンティティに強く依存するため、機械的な一括置換は行いません。

補足:Person of color (POC) について

colored は歴史的差別語として避けられますが、person of color / people of color (POC) は「白人以外の有色人種・マイノリティ全般」を指す現代的な包括表現として公的・学術的にも広く使われています。特定の一民族(Black 等)と単純同義ではない点に注意が必要です。
